The majority of cues are two-piece comprising a forearm or butt with a one piece maple shaft. Pro style cues have low deflection shafts made by splicing pie shaped pieces together from 8 to 12 pieces. For these cues, graphics are hand or machine inlays, exotic woods, and more. Higher end cues generally have low deflection shafts, and many are made in USA. Low deflection shafts are stiffer and shoot straighter, but require lots of practice to get used to.
Cues under $250 generally do not have low deflection shafts. They are made overseas (usually in China). Decorative details are decals and laminates.
Carbon Fiber shafts are the newest trend. A carbon fiber shaft offers extra durability and won't ding, nick or scratch as easily as a wood shaft can. This is known to be a nuisance to every pool player.
A carbon fiber shaft is smoother and slicker than a wood shaft. This is due to a wood shaft being prone to collecting the oils off your hand, thus the chalk and dirt accumulating and creating an uncomfortable feeling while in stroke, with the shaft sticking to your skin.
A carbon fiber shaft is a slick material to begin with and with the added cue finishing process, the results offer the smoothest shaft that stays cleaner and glides sooo smoothly across the skin. Ahh! The smoother carbon fiber thus eliminates the usage of the cone chalk hand powder, which can be messy. Throw a glove on and you'll be gliding like the moonwalk dance.
A carbon fiber shaft ultimately offers the best value by combining the most enhanced performing, least deflection shaft in the market, for the all-around pool player and hustler!
